On the 20th to 23rd of August, 2009, Uppsala University hosts a major conference to acknowledge
the readers of the works of the Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874–1942).
For a century Montgomery’s world famous novel
Anne of Green Gables has continued to
attract readers from all over the world. The conference is a tribute to all the readers of
Montgomery who have made one hundred years of readership possible.
The main theme of the conference is Reading Response. Together with many distinguished
scholars from all over the world we will explore reading experiences of
Anne of Green Gables
and other works by L. M. Montgomery. Scholars from more than ten different countries will
attend, which shows the range of the interest of Montgomery’s fiction.
During the conference we will present
- interesting panels with some of the worlds most distinguished scholars on the works of L. M. Montgomery
- a special day open to the public (Sunday the 23rd) including lectures by Swedish and
Canadian speakers as well as an interview session with Kate Macdonald, a representative of the
Heirs of Montgomery, who is visiting Sweden for the first time (first half of the day will be
held in English, the second half in Swedish)
- a Montgomery book fair
- a guided tour of some of Uppsala’s most interesting historic sites
Part from the second half of the last day the conference, as well as the tour of the final day,
will be held in English.
